For this project, I was challenged to bring the WB logo into the world of Mortal Kombat, in preperation for the upcoming sequel film in the modern franchise: Mortal Kombat 2.

Ending on the 3D Warner Bros. logo, this ID would be designed to be seen in the movie theatres and home video. The goal of this title sequence was to integrate the WB logo with the movie content itself. I had to provide hints and references to the source material.

EYES ON THE DIGITIZE

The key to this success was to design for nostalgia. Showing that we were in-tune with not only the work of media that Warner Bros was adapting, but also the memories that fans hold for such a gaming classic is the ticket to becoming a smash hit.

The ID that precedes the trailer was the perfect tool, emulating the classic style of the original video game and its digitized actors.

IN-PROCESS

Two different styles were created: one pixelated and reminiscent of the 16-bit Sega Genesis video game, and one that evoked the modern VFX of the Mortal Kombat film franchise.

The pixelated 2D version utilized the terrain and iconography of the "Kombat Tomb" stage from the Mortal Kombat II game. The logo had been traced by hand into pixel line-art to fully integrate into the harsh pixels of the scene without feeling low-resolution.

Originally the 3D  version was going to include a 3D render of 'Kombat Tomb' as the background, but this was removed as it made the design too busy. The focus was allowed to be shifted to the Warned Bros. logo itself, while keeping its modern aesthetic.
